Before we moved to Amsterdam and we’d come here as weekend visitors, Papeneiland was our favourite bar. Like moths to a flame we were drawn to its twinkling fairy lights, its crooked charm and its cosy, centuries old interior. Now we live three minutes away, we love it just as much – and we’ll often hole up in here on a cold night, drink local beers and watch the world go by outside.
If you’re looking for a cosy, traditional Amsterdam bar where you can curl up and imagine yourself in Amsterdam two hundred years ago, then Papeneiland (anno 1642) is it. Sure, it can be a bit of a tourist draw but don’t let that put you off – if you can get a good seat in here then don’t give it up in a hurry.
