The building that looks like a giant bathtub on Museumplein (next to the Van Gogh museum) is the Stedelijk – Amsterdam’s museum of modern art and design. Perhaps our favourite Amsterdam museum – or the one that we visit the most frequently in any case – the Stedelijk is a must visit for anyone with an interest in contemporary art. In here you can trace major movements like Bauhaus, the Amsterdam School, De Stijl and pop art, and see iconic works by the likes of Warhol, Cezanne, Chagall, Dumas, Kandinsky, Matisse and De Stijl artists Mondrian and Rietveld. And overall it’s just such a beautiful space to lose yourself in for a few hours.
Upstairs there’s a lovely bright café (perch at the window stools behind the bar for a nice street view) and a large space for temporary exhibitions which are normally excellent – so check the website to see what’s on.
