Meneer Nieges

Located on the waterfront in the Westerdok area to the west of Central Station (just far enough away from the centre to be off most tourists’ radars), Meneer Nieges is a restaurant and bar from the team behind Hannekes Boom and Bloemenbar, and lovely place to hang out in all seasons.

One of its biggest draws is its large waterside terrace, which has a quirky, Alice in Wonderland vibe with lots of interesting touches like a firepit in a pretty iron pergola, a water feature and flower planter made out of a grand piano, and a fence made out of front doors. But it’s not only in the summer that Meneer Nieges shines – inside there’s a kitsch, light-filled restaurant (really good food by the way – see the menu) with views across the IJ river, a cosy fireplace to huddle around on cold days and even a secret ‘brown’ cafe tucked away in one corner of the bar.

Weekend evenings are lively – but not too lively – with DJs spinning great music to a crowd of trendy young locals.

Tip: Although it’s bathed in sunshine all morning, the terrace doesn’t get too much evening sun thanks to the shade of a nearby building, so bring a sweater if you want to sit outside.
